I made this up when I had a bottle of Dr. Pepper in my fridge for months. We don’t drink much soda, so I decided to try an experiment: Sweet BBQ Sauce from soda. There’s only ONE tricky thing about this recipe, and it’s reducing the Soda down to just the right consistency! So the first time you try this it might take some close attention…….
But Folks, we are going to make delicious BBQ sauce from a Liter of Soda! I have tried Dr. Pepper, Coca Cola, and Root Beer. They all work great. I’m sure you could try a clear Soda like Sprite too. I’m thinking chilies and pineapple would be good with the clear sodas. Here’s the basic recipe, and you can interchange your flavors. (disclaimer to those who took my cooking class: you already have this recipe! Note: this is going to be a sweet sauce (duh!)….
Start with 1 Liter soda, such as Dr. Pepper, Coke, or Root Beer Put the whole bottle in a large saucepan, bring to a boil, lower the heat so it boils gently, (a little more than simmer and a little less than rolling…probably medium heat). Cook until it begins to thicken. Mine takes about an hour to an hour and a half. It’s important to watch it in the later stages or it will thicken too much and burn. (ask me how I know)……. When it is the thickness of syrup, add these ingredients:
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup catsup
1 Tbs. mustard
2 Tbs. chili Paste
1 Tbs. worchestershire sauce
1 tsp. crushed garlic
Stir all in and cook about 5 minutes. Store in fridge. I have written the basic recipe for you, but it’s up to you to try new things with it. For instance, we love spice, so I added a chopped jalapeno last time I made it. Crushed pineapple? I think I’m going to try Creme Soda next time with jalapenos and all kinds of spice! Amaze your friends!!!
