FRENCH ONION POPCORN

It’s hard to take an attractive picture of Popcorn.  Just imagine each kernel with a little bow on it.  And thanks to Tricia Yearwood for this great recipe idea!

My neighbor asked me today what my favorite cooking show is…..very hard to say, although I’ve always loved Ina Garden.  But Pioneer Woman is great too.  The Kitchen, any cooking competitions, especially the Next Food Network Star (how’d that work out for you, Guy Fieri?).  Master Chef, Top Chef, Lidia Bastianich, the old Julia Child’s on PBS…..I could go on and on.  Cooking is so timeless!!!

This particular recipe came from Tricia Yearwood.  I give her total credit for the idea, and of course I tweaked it my own way, which I will now share.

FRENCH ONION SOUP POPCORN

1 bag popped microwave popcorn (or make your own, since I just read that there are carcinogens in the packaging).  Wow.

Here is where you can go a different direction.  You can just melt 1/2 stick of butter and then sprinkle a whole pak of dry French onion soup mix over the hot popped corn, and toss toss toss.

But just in case you don’t have any French Onion Soup mix on hand, here’s how to make your own:

2 Tbs. dry onion flakes

2 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

2 tsp. dry chives

2 tsp. granulated garlic or garlic powder

1 tsp. onion powder

(the sugar part surprised me, but I tried it, and it’s delish…..ask me how I know!)

The only guidance I have for you after trying this several times is this:  As SOON as you pull the popcorn out, drizzle the melted butter over and then sprinkle the FO mix over all as evenly as possible, then Toss, Toss, Toss.  This is so the powder will stick better to the hot butter.   This is absolutely delish!!

Now, cooks.  Listen UP!  This gave me so many ideas as to mixtures to toss in my popcorn.

How about Parmesan cheese and coarse black pepper

Or, butter and lots of cinnamon sugar??

Butter, Mexican chipotle spices with garlic powder, onion powder……Go Crazy!!

Thai spices……super HOT!  (just like my Popcorn loving friend, Angela!)
